Above: the petrol museum with iconic nodding donkey. On Monday a friend of Samuels will come to the house by the beach for lunch. He owns some salt flats (they nick-name him Rei das Salinas - King of the salt flats). He also tells me he has three small oil wells and gets a monthly royalty from Petrobras of R$ 6,000 per month.

After lunch drive 30 mins in land to Mossoro. Silverina grew up here. it is where she met and married Samuel. They have 9 sonds and daughters, 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Back at the beach house. We are joined by friends of Alfredo - a couple with 12 year old son. In the evening Alfredo's friend asks me, What does the British Council do? The previous week I have been practising just this question - explaining it to imaginery university deans, etc. I can't wait to launch into an explanation of our purpose and objectives but can't get past the first - we promote the English language. Either my explanation is off the mark or the bottle of vodka he drank with Alfredo (who has retired) has impaired his receptivity to the Council's objectives - either way my first authentic conversation about puposes and objectives is a complete disaster.
